Getting used to dentures is a big change, and we know it takes some time to settle in. Whether you have just started wearing your first set or you have been using them for years, these appliances are more than just a quick fix for a missing smile. They are a way to get back to eating the foods you love, speaking with confidence, and feeling like yourself again. Because they become such a part of your daily life, taking care of them is really just taking care of your own comfort and health.
At Family Dental of Pelham, we always tell our patients that looking after dentures does not have to be a chore. It is really just about getting into a rhythm. Once you have a routine, it becomes second nature. This simple habit keeps your breath fresh, prevents gum irritation, and helps your dentures last as long as possible.
Your day should start with a clean slate. Even if your dentures spent the night in a cleaning solution, it is good to give them a quick refresh.
Before you put them in, rinse them off with lukewarm water. While you do this, take a second to look at them. Check for any small chips, cracks, or areas where the plastic looks worn down. If you notice something that does not look right, let us know. It is usually much easier to fix a small issue before it becomes a break.
Even if you do not have your natural teeth, your gums still need some love. Use a soft bristled toothbrush or a clean, damp cloth to gently wipe down your gums, your tongue, and the roof of your mouth. This helps get your blood flowing and washes away the bacteria that can cause bad breath. If you have partial dentures, make sure to brush any natural teeth you still have with fluoride toothpaste.
Caring for your dentures does not stop once you put them in. A few small habits during the day can make your life a lot more comfortable.
If you have just finished a meal, try to rinse your dentures with water. It is a simple way to clear away trapped food particles. If you are out and about at a restaurant and cannot do a full cleaning, even a quick rinse in the restroom can make a big difference in how your mouth feels for the rest of the day.
Modern dentures are pretty tough, but they are not exactly the same as natural teeth. Try to avoid biting directly into very hard or sticky foods with your front teeth. Cutting your food into smaller, manageable bites and chewing on both sides of your mouth helps keep the pressure even. This prevents your dentures from tipping or sliding while you eat.
The most important part of the day is before you go to bed. This is your chance to give your mouth a rest and clean your dentures properly.
We have heard a lot of stories about dentures slipping and hitting the bathroom sink. It happens to the best of us. To be safe, fill your sink with some water or lay down a soft towel before you start cleaning. If they do slip from your hands, that soft landing can save you from a repair bill.
Use a brush meant for dentures or a very soft toothbrush. Avoid using regular toothpaste because it is often too abrasive. It can leave tiny scratches on the acrylic where bacteria like to hide. Instead, use a little bit of mild dish soap or a paste specifically made for dentures. Brush all the surfaces, including the side that sits against your gums, to get rid of any plaque or leftover adhesive.
Dentures need to stay moist to keep their shape. If they dry out, they can warp, and that makes them feel uncomfortable when you put them back in. Keep them in a container with a proper cleaning solution or just plain water while you sleep. The cleaning solution is helpful because it kills bacteria and removes stains that brushing might miss.
You might be tempted to keep your dentures in all the time, but your gums need a rest. Wearing them constantly puts pressure on your jaw ridges. Taking them out at night allows your gums to breathe and lets the blood circulate properly. Think of it like taking off a pair of tight shoes after a long day. Your mouth will thank you for the break.
Even with a perfect home routine, you still need to see us occasionally. At Family Dental of Pelham, we like to see our patients for regular checkups to clean the dentures and check how your tissues are doing.
Your jawbone naturally changes over time. It is a normal part of life, but it means that dentures which fit perfectly today might feel a little loose in a few years. If you notice you are using more adhesive than you used to, or if you feel any sore spots, let us know. We can often reline the denture to get that snug, comfortable fit back.
Q: Is hot water okay?
A: We suggest staying away from hot or boiling water. It can warp the plastic and change the shape of your dentures. If it is too hot for your skin, it is too hot for your dentures.
Q: What about bleach?
A: Please do not use bleach. It can change the color of the pink part and make the teeth look dull. It can also weaken the material over time.
Q: How long do they last?
A: Most people find they need a new set every five to seven years. This is usually because the jawbone has changed or the teeth have worn down from years of use.
Q: What if they break?
A: Please avoid fixing them yourself with superglue or kits from the store. Those glues are not meant for your mouth and can damage the dentures permanently. Give us a call, and we will take care of it properly.
Q: Why the bad breath?
A: Odors usually come from bacteria trapped in the material or on your tongue. Keeping up with the nightly soaking and brushing your tongue and gums usually does the trick.
